Sometimes that spade shovel just isn’t cutting it anymore… literally. Chances are, it needs to be sharpened. Why work harder than you have to? Below, we’ll discuss how to put an edge back on your shovel: Secure it: Get your shovel into a vise so that it’s stationary when you begin sharpening.Starting point: Pick a side of the shovelhead and start filing with long strokes, at a 45 degree angle. You’re not trying to slice butter with the thing so it only needs to be done on one side. Also, you don’t want to overdo it and file down the tip of the shovel. Finishing up: When you are all finished, take some WD-40 and spray down the part you filed. This will help prevent rust on the newly exposed metal.
